Northwestern State University’s intramural flag football team won a regional title in December and earlier this month competed at the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association championships at the University of West Florida.

It was a long season for the team, but they have many reasons to be proud.

At December’s NIRSA Regional Flag Football Tournament at the University of Southern Mississippi, they defeated Stephen F. Austin State University, University of West Florida and Louisiana Tech to win the championship.

Male and female MVPs were Cody Wager and Savonya Robinson, respectively. The two MVPs along with McKinley Greenhouse and Meghan Knight were named to the All-Regional team.

Other NSU team members include Jeremy Aaron, Asante Belton, Naterria Davis, Kelsey Gallman, Amber Griffin, Adia Keys, Da’Maryon Lee, Louis Mayweather, Chatoria Pace, Byron Stevens, Destany Washington, Paige West and Tracy Wilridge.

Prior to forming a CoRec team to compete at regionals, the women’s team won the state championship. This CoRec team consists of an equal number of men and women on the team. The roster can have a maximum of 16 players, with eight on the field at a time.

Scheduling issues, lack of funding and last year’s second-place finish are a few factors that prevented the team from continuing past regional championships in the past. This year, however, the team claimed the region title and advanced to nationals.

Competing in Pensacola, Florida, NSU beat University of Central Florida 35-20 but lost to Mississippi State later that day.

Jason Stelly, associate director of intramural sports, describes the whole program as “exciting!” NSU’s program is strong because the students are involved and represent the university with passion and good sportsmanship.

The flag football team is part of the Intramural program provided by the WRAC, which provides leagues of sports for students to participate in beyond the classroom. Other sports include basketball, volleyball and softball.

This semester, basketball sign-ups end Jan. 25, with games beginning Jan. 29. Softball sign-ups end March 1, and games begin March 12. More information about intramural sports is available at wrac.nsula.edu
