Porter Forum brings alumni speakers

The 51st annual J. Walter Porter Forum organized by the School of Business will be held Oct. 19 in Russell Hall featuring three Northwestern State alumni speakers. This year’s theme, “It’s Not Business as Usual,” seeks to inspire students to go the extra mile to stand out in the job market.

The Porter Forum originated as a tribute to the life and legacy of J. Walter Porter, a businessman hailing from Texas that sought to “bridge the gap” between the business industry and students at the collegiate level. Following his death in 1965, his family chose Northwestern State, a school with which they had no former ties with, to host the forum.

Dr. Margaret Kilcoyne, director and dean of the School of Business, explained the forum is a way for students to network and interact with business professionals. They can learn what the expectations are for future employment and gain knowledge on how to prepare for life after their undergraduate careers.

Kilcoyne also said alumni and others in the business industry are able to use the forum as a platform to give advice to students.

“[Speakers will say,] ‘Let me tell you what it was like,’ or ‘I wish I would’ve paid attention to this,'” she said. “It’s a win-win [situation] for everybody.”

Speakers this year are Rob Robertson, Nikki Ceasar Small and Tommy Wright – NSU alumni proving successful in their field. Robertson is currently employed by Wells Fargo Home Mortgage; Small serves as the associate director of graduate admissions at Northwood University; and Wright works for RSM US and sits on the board of the NSU Foundation.

The event will begin at 9:40 a.m. in Room 107 of Russell Hall and conclude with a luncheon at 12:15 p.m. in the Natchitoches Room.
